What to Wear in Egypt: The Ultimate 2026 Packing Guide

Feb 03, 2026

1. The Golden Rule: Modesty is Respect

Egypt is a conservative but welcoming country. While there is no formal "dress code" for tourists, dressing modestly helps you blend in and significantly reduces unwanted attention.
• For Women: Aim to cover your shoulders and knees. Think flowy maxi dresses, linen trousers, and t-shirts.
• For Men: T-shirts and jeans or chinos are standard. While shorts are fine at the Pyramids or beach resorts, long trousers are preferred for dinner and city walks.

2. Fabric Choice: Linen & Cotton are King

The Egyptian sun is powerful. Synthetic fabrics like polyester will make you sweat and feel uncomfortable.
• Pro Tip: Pack lightweight linen shirts and wide-leg cotton pants. They allow the breeze to cool your skin while providing a physical barrier against the sun.

3. Footwear: Style vs. Sand

You will be walking on uneven stones, hot sand, and dusty streets.
• Sightseeing: Sturdy, breathable sneakers or closed-toe walking sandals are best for the Pyramids and temples.
• Evening: A pair of clean loafers or dressy sandals for the Nile Cruise dinners.
• Note: Flip-flops are only recommended for the pool or the beach.

4. Essential Accessories

• The Scarf: A lightweight pashmina or scarf is the most versatile item you can pack. Use it to cover your head when entering mosques or to shield your shoulders from the midday sun.
• Polarized Sunglasses & Wide-Brim Hat: The glare off the desert sand is intense. Protect your eyes and face.
• The "Temple Socks": Some mosques and historic sites require you to remove your shoes. Bring a clean pair of socks in your bag if you don't want to walk barefoot.
